Georgetown, Guyana (Credible Sources) During his weekly press conference on January 9, 2025, Vice President and General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Bharrat Jagdeo, provided a preview of the government’s focus for Budget 2025, which will be read in an election year. He emphasized that the upcoming budget would prioritize addressing community concerns and incentivizing hard work through tax reforms.
Jagdeo stated that the 2025 budget would reflect an “enhanced focus on community issues, issues that have been raised by people in our numerous engagements when we visit these communities.” He also stressed the importance of transparency and direct engagement, noting that the government has consistently maintained open lines of communication with the public. “This government has been in almost every community in the country repeatedly,” he said, highlighting the value of direct, live-streamed dialogues with citizens.
He explained that the budget would incentivize hard work by evolving the taxation system. “The taxation system would evolve in a manner that rewards those who work harder, who may make greater efforts,” Jagdeo said. He also emphasized that the government is committed to allowing citizens to retain more of their income. “We want the Guyanese population, both in the public sector and in the private sector, to keep more of the money they earn and less goes to paying taxes,” he added.
Jagdeo also touched on broader economic impacts, stating that incomes in the public sector have grown by GY$100 billion annually since 2020. He attributed this increase to reduced taxes, ensuring that citizens retain more disposable income. “Income earned versus disposable income, that is the idea here,” he explained.
Looking ahead, the budget will also focus on critical sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, and security, while addressing issues raised during public consultations, such as waste management and community road development. “This year, there’d be an enhanced focus on additional community issues,” Jagdeo said.
Vice President Jagdeo affirmed the government’s continued commitment to delivering on its promises and improving the quality of life for all Guyanese, stating, “We listen to people, and we address those concerns.”
