In a bold statement released yesterday, Vincent Jordan, Member of Parliament for the PNCR/APNU Coalition, has called on the Minister of Agriculture to address pressing allegations of corruption within his ministry. Jordan accuses the Ministry of Agriculture, under the PPP/C administration, of being “plagued with corruption,” highlighting recent incidents that he claims have gone unanswered.

One of the key issues raised by Jordan is the rehabilitation of the Albion Estate Powerhouse Control Room. He questions how damages initially estimated at GYD 50 million were repaired at a staggering cost of GYD 600 million.

“The Minister has to date failed to answer the questions of how 50 million dollars estimated damages to the powerhouse control room at Albion Estate were rehabilitated for a whopping 600 million dollars,” Jordan stated.

He also alleges that investigations into corruption at major agencies—including the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA), Guyana Marketing Corporation (GMC), Mahaica Mahaicony Abary-Agricultural Development Authority (MMA/ADA), and GuySuCo—have been kept secret, according to Jordan, press release calling for transparency have gone unanswered.

Determined to seek accountability, Jordan has submitted a series of questions to the National Assembly. “It is necessary that the last avenue of questioning within the democracy be utilized to its fullest,” he asserted.

Jordan emphasized the coalition’s commitment to ensuring that all Guyanese receive answers regarding these allegations. “The PNCR/APNU Coalition will continue to press the Minister of Agriculture to ensure that all Guyanese get answers to the questions of corruption leveled against his Ministry,” he said.

The Ministry of Agriculture has faced scrutiny in recent years over allegations of mismanagement and corruption. The issues raised by MP Jordan add to a growing list of concerns about transparency and accountability within the ministry and its associated agencies.

Stakeholders and citizens alike are urging the Ministry to address these allegations promptly. Transparency advocates argue that clear communication and accountability are essential for maintaining public trust in governmental institutions.
