The town of Linden recently played host to the Girls Stand Up Annual Conference, a remarkable initiative aimed at empowering teenage girls. Hon. Amanza Walton-Desir, MP, played a central role in the event, emphasizing the importance of self-empowerment and dreaming beyond limitations. Reflecting on the theme, “Dream Beyond,” Walton-Desir highlighted how the conference encouraged participants to delve deep into their unique qualities and use these strengths to pursue their aspirations. “We have things that we want to accomplish in our lives, but very many times we lack the tools and the advice and the resources to be able to go after those dreams,” she stated.

As the keynote speaker on the first day, Walton-Desir spoke to the girls about self-validation, self-love, and self-esteem in her presentation. She underscored the significance of these values in developing a positive self-image and building resilience against societal pressures. “We were talking about self-esteem and self-love and teaching them how important it is for them to validate themselves in a world where, you know, we’re so often quick to tear each other down and ridicule each other,” Walton-Desir remarked.

The two-day conference saw a successful morning session and continued with additional impactful activities. Walton-Desir congratulated the organizers for their dedication and highlighted the necessity of such initiatives. “It was a very interesting morning. We continued into the afternoon and the program extended into the next day. I was very happy to be there, and I really want to commend the conveners of this program. We need so many more programs like this for our young women across this country,” she concluded. The conference represented a vital step towards fostering a supportive and empowering environment for young women in Guyana.
