The long-delayed Cemetery Road expansion project is set for completion within the next two weeks, as announced by Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill. In an interview with the Department of Public Information (DPI), Minister Edghill assured the public that he is personally overseeing the completion of this $475 million project, which has been awarded to Avinash Contracting.

“We are committed to finalizing this project as promised. I am taking personal responsibility to ensure that it is completed within the next two weeks,” Minister Edghill affirmed.

Initially scheduled for completion last year, the project has encountered numerous delays, the first owing to what the Minister told the National Assembly were “supernatural forces”. To address setbacks, the Public Works Ministry conducted multiple reviews over the weekend, with the most recent assessment led by Minister within the Ministry, Deodat Indar. These reviews aimed to determine the necessary steps to expedite the project’s completion.

To accelerate progress, the Ministry has authorized two sub-contractors to handle specific tasks, all within the originally approved budget for Avinash Contracting. One sub-contractor will focus on finishing the bridge at Cemetery Road and Princess Street, while the other will widen the culvert at Sussex Street.

Avinash Contracting will continue to be responsible for paving the main carriageway between Middle Road and Sussex Street, which has already been expanded. The government is also seeking liquidated damages from the contractor due to the failure to meet the initial deadlines, according to DPI.
