Bail Denied for GDF Ranks Caught with Ganja

Diamond Magistrate’s Court, July 22, 2024 – Two Guyana Defense Force (GDF) ranks, Staff Sergeant Adisa Higgings (18033) and Sergeant Colvis Sam (22722), appeared at the Diamond Magistrate’s Court today charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. Bail was denied, and both ranks were remanded to jail until August 12, 2024.

The incident, which took place last Thursday morning at around 03:45 hrs, involved a joint intelligence-led operation conducted by police ranks from Special Branch and Regional Division 4 ‘B.’ The two GDF personnel were intercepted along the Coverden Public Road, East Bank Demerara, near the Prairie Hotel. During the operation, 22 bulky bags containing 154 lbs of ganja were discovered in their vehicle, a GDF motor vehicle registered as DFB 1786.

Attorney-at-law Bernard Da Silva represented Staff Sergeant Adisa Higgings, while attorney Patrice Henry represented Sergeant Colvis Sam. Both men are stationed at GDF’s Camp Ayanganna Headquarters. Higgings hails from Linden, and Sam is from Turkeyen.

According to police reports, the vehicle was driven by Sergeant Colvis Sam and had Staff Sergeant Adisa Higgings as the passenger. The search conducted by the police revealed 22 bulky bags containing suspected cannabis, including leaves, seeds, and stems. The two GDF ranks were informed of the offense of trafficking in narcotics, cautioned, and subsequently arrested. The suspected cannabis was weighed and confirmed to be 154 lbs.

Following their arrest, both ranks were taken into custody and transported to the Regional Police Division 4 ‘B’ Headquarters. The case has been adjourned until August 12, 2024, for further proceedings.
