In a significant bust, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) announced the arrest of two ranks from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) early yesterday morning, July 18, 2024. The operation, which took place at approximately 03:45h, led to the discovery of 154 lbs of narcotics in their possession. The two GDF personnel were apprehended during a joint intelligence-led operation by ranks from Special Branch and Regional Division 4 ‘B’.
The vehicle, identified as DFB 1786 and belonging to the GDF, was driven by a 31-year-old GDF Sergeant from Turkeyen, with a 42-year-old GDF Staff Sergeant from Linden as the passenger. Both men are stationed at Camp Ayanganna Headquarters. The police intercepted the vehicle along Coverden Public Road, East Bank Demerara, near the Prairie Hotel, and found 22 bulky bags containing suspected cannabis.
Upon discovering the narcotics, the GDF ranks were informed of the offence of trafficking in narcotics, cautioned, and taken into custody. The suspected cannabis was weighed at the Regional Police Division 4 ‘B’ Headquarters, totaling 154 lbs. Investigations are ongoing.
This comes days after another significant arrest, where a 29-year-old Police Constable was apprehended with 9.60 kilograms of suspected cannabis. The constable was caught during an intelligence-led operation at the Garden of Eden Public Road, East Bank Demerara, further highlighting the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in Guyana.
