Emergency repair works are set to commence on Thursday to address the deteriorating conditions of West Watooka Road, a vital thoroughfare in Linden, Region Ten. Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill, announced on Wednesday that an emergency contract has been engaged to fix the road, with works starting tomorrow morning.
The minister inspected the road recently, responding to numerous complaints from residents, road users and regional officials about the challenges posed by its current state. The road has suffered significantly from the effects of the rainy season, with a collapsed culvert worsening the situation.
Residents can expect improvements that will enhance both safety and accessibility on this critical link for residents and businesses in the mining town. Minister Edghill also emphasized the need for proactive maintenance and responsible usage of the roadways, criticizing some regional officials for their passive approach.
The Chairman of Region 10 Deron Adams told our publication when contacted, “We have been calling on the Minister of Public Works to allocate resources on a regular basis to maintain this road. A truck actually turned over on this road.” Chairman Adams said in 2022 the road along Casuarina Drive was completed, but for light use, motor vehicle use.
“Logging trucks and container trucks, those commercial vehicles, we had put a policy in place for them to utilize the Noitgedacht bypass or access road Unfortunately because of the poor and lack of maintenance of the of the road,” Adams stated.
The Regional Chairman said resident of Region 10 are paying their taxes, the regional officials are making the representation, and “those roads and bridges and drains in your area, they’re turning a blind eye to it.” He said in areas the government perceive they do not have electoral support, they are skipping those submissions that were made by local elected officials and proceeding to expedite work in ‘certain areas’.”
