Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn has raised significant concerns about potential corruption within the Guyana Police Force (GPF), emphasizing the need for a new era of accountable and honest policing. Addressing GPF ranks at the opening of its 185th anniversary symposium, Benn highlighted the importance of transparency and integrity in the management of funds allocated to the force.

Benn’s remarks come in light of ongoing investigations into financial irregularities allegedly involving Deputy Commissioner (ag) Calvin Brutus. While Commissioner of Police (ag) Clifton Hicken initially denied any ongoing investigation, a subsequent statement from the GPF confirmed that Brutus had requested leave to facilitate the probe. This investigation will be conducted by the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU), underscoring the seriousness of the allegations.

The Minister stressed the critical need for accountability at all levels, citing multiple oversight bodies, including the Procurement Commission and the Auditor General’s office, that will be involved in addressing these issues. Benn underscored his commitment to ensuring that funds are properly managed and accounted for, warning that any fraudulent activities must be eradicated to restore trust in the GPF.
