The Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) has tabled a comprehensive proposal seeking a 39.5% salary increase for teachers in 2024. This proposal is part of a multi-year agreement with the Government of Guyana, aiming to enhance teachers’ compensation significantly. In addition to the 2024 increase, the GTU is advocating for a 30% salary hike for each subsequent year, 2025 and 2026. These proposed increases reflect the union’s commitment to securing better financial and working conditions for educators.

The proposal includes additional benefits such as 100 University of Guyana scholarships annually, a $40,000 clothing allowance, and 300 duty-free concessions for vehicles up to 2000 cc. The GTU also emphasizes the need for improved conditions for teachers serving in interior and hinterland regions, advocating for reduced service periods required for fulfilling contractual obligations with the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE).

The recent negotiations between the GTU and the Ministry of Education have been described as productive, with both parties expressing satisfaction with the progress made. The Ministry of Education stated that they are committed to serving teachers’ interests and ensuring that the terms of employment reflect their hard work and dedication. Further talks are scheduled to continue on July 25, 2024, to finalize the terms of the new multi-year agreement.
