Four children die in six days

Ricardo Mahabir was admitted to the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital on April 14, 2024, with no signs of life, after being found unresponsive at home.

A day later, his sister, Arianna Mahabir,  9, died in critical condition on April 15, 2024, while preparing for transfer to GPHC. They resided at New Area Canefield, East Canje, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne). Arianna, her mother alleges, was given an injection by health workers, leading to her demise.

Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony told the media recently that the children died from complications of dengue fever, but soon afterwards stated that further tests are required.

Naiomi Raghu, an 8-year-old student from New Market Primary School, died after falling ill. The child’s father, Chandeker Raghu, reported that she suffered from fever, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Niaomi was initially admitted to Skeldon Hospital but was subsequently transferred to New Amsterdam on Tuesday.

Additionally, Malachi Mosely, a 14-year-old from Bare Root, East Coast Demerara, and a Buxton Secondary student, died on Thursday afternoon at 15.30 hours at the Dr. CC Nicolson Hospital in Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara, after suffering from diarrhoea, dizziness, and vomiting.
