– AG says “We have, statistically, per capita, the highest incidence of road accidents and road fatalities”
Traffic Chief Senior Superintendent Mahendra Singh attributes speeding and drunk driving as the main causes of road accidents. According to a video statement released on the Guyana Police Force’s Facebook page last Sunday, the Traffic Department recorded 138 fatalities from 116 accidents from January 1 to October 8, 2023.
Road accident fatalities were said to have climbed compared to 2022, where there were 84 fatalities. The Traffic Chief implores road users to ”comply with the rules of the road and directions of police in uniform.”
A warning was also issued to motorists to remain in compliance with the traffic laws of Guyana while parking vehicles, as the Traffic Chief stated, ”We are asking you to be considerate to the extent that you will park your vehicles in designated places or spaces and to resist the temptation to become an errant motorist.”
Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall also addressed the recent reckless accidents and the lack of effective penalties being faced, on his program ‘Issues in the News’.
He stated that “the open carelessness which takes place on the roadways of our country results in injuries and deaths over and above what we can afford as a country. We’re still a very small population, and we have, statistically, per capita, the highest incidence of road accidents and road fatalities.”
He also stated that “a responsible government has to take steps that may penalize certain sections of the population, but if that is what is required, what do you want the government to do?” he quizzed.
According to the Guyana Police Force, there has been a decline in road fatalities recorded over the last three weeks.
