The Guyanese government, both the President and Leader of the Opposition, stand resolute in their representation of Guyana.

The recent statements made by Venezuela about Guyana and its territory have forced President Irfaan Ali to reach out to the Leader of the Opposition, Aubrey Norton. Ali, in a statement, said he had briefed Norton about the evolving situation.

In a press release out of the Office of the Leader of the Opposition dated Saturday, September 23, 2023, the Leader of the Opposition also confirmed that the briefing had taken place.

Mr. Norton reaffirmed the Opposition’s support for Guyana’s long-held position that the Arbitral Award of 1899 settled the border between Guyana and Venezuela and that Essequibo belongs to Guyana.

The release stated that the Leader of the People’s National Congress (PNC) informed the President that they are united on this issue and reassured him of the Opposition’s support of all measures aimed at protecting our territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Mr. Norton also indicated to the President that he supports the view that Guyana has the right to undertake economic activity within its territory and in its appurtenant maritime territories.

The Opposition opposes and condemns all forms of aggression by Venezuela against Guyana. The statement said the Opposition also welcomes the support of the international community in protecting our territorial integrity and sovereignty.
