Conflict of Interest: A manager at the National Communication Network (NCN) in Linden allegedly received one of the road contracts

Guyanese recently took to social media to express their frustration with the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) led government. Many said yesterday’s contract signing exercise in the mining town of Linden, Region 10, is another example of the PPP mantra ‘Friends, Family, Favourites and Flatterers’ as the PPP gifted itself over $643 million in concrete road contracts.

Many persons pictured in photos posted by the Ministry of Public Works have been identified by members of the public as PPP candidates or PPP workers who were active for the party on election day during the recently concluded Local Government Elections (LGE).

It has also been noted monies given to contractors will not “pass through the hands of these contractors” as materials will be procured by the government directly from suppliers like the sole supplier of concrete in Linden.

In a post on the Ministry’s Facebook page, it stated, “Minister of Public Works, Hon. Bishop Juan Edghill said a total of 5.4 kilometres of roads will be constructed. Minister Edghill told the 49 local contractors who will be carrying out these works to procure high-quality materials for their projects. He urged them to work along with the Ministry’s Engineer and Clerk of Works to ensure they meet the quality level stipulated in their contracts.”
