In a statement, Geeta Chandan-Edmond, A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) Opposition Parliamentarian and Attorney-at-Law, said the mysterious ‘Policia’ signs are another chapter in the lack of transparency and governance saga that has gripped our nation.

The appearance of ‘Policia’ on vehicles belonging to the Guyana Police Force (GPF) must be explained to the population forthwith. In a country of any consequence, citizens must not wake up to signs on security vehicles without an explanation. It is the duty of a transparent government to present to the population what policy decisions led to this development, at what forum or level this decision was made, when the decision was made, and what the aims and objectives of this policy are.

“It is regrettable that days have elapsed without a word from the Ministry of Home Affairs or the Guyana Police Force on the reason for this development. I hereby call on the Government to honor their oath to the people and explain this change, which is being funded by the people’s money. This call is made against the backdrop of rising crime and Guyana facing its most insecure time in decades, this lack of transparency does not help,” the MP stated.

In a recent Facebook post, veteran Journalist Gordon Mosley observed that the emblem was attached to vehicles belonging to the GPF and questioned their origins and under whose authority. The post read, “The Guyana Police Force is still to officially explain its sudden and unannounced decision to have Police vehicles emblazoned with the word “Policia”, which is Spanish for Police.”

The post continued, “Many police officers are unaware of the reason behind the decision, but one senior Officer explained that he believes it is to cater to the country’s growing Spanish population. It might serve well to remind the Guyana Police Force that Guyana’s only Spanish-speaking neighbour has been claiming a large portion of Guyana’s territory for over a century, and the matter has now even found itself before the International Court. Guyana is an English speaking country and the word POLICE is recognized globally in any language.”
