According to police and fire service officials, an explosion inside an office building in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka resulted in at least 15 fatalities and 140 injuries. Just before 5 o’clock local time (11:00 GMT) on Tuesday, the explosion shook the fourth and fifth floors of a five-story building in Gulistan, a significant center for wholesale goods in the capital.
Authorities were unable to immediately explain what caused the enormous explosion in the busy commercial area. Inspector Bachchu Mia was quoted by Bangladesh’s Daily Star newspaper and the Reuters news agency as saying, “So far, 15 people (two women and 13 men) have died and more than 140 injured have been brought to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH)”.
