On Thursday, March 2, 2023, the Region 9 Regional Democratic Council undertook, using a private contractor and Venezuelan nationals, to break and enter the PNCR’s office in Lethem and started to demolish it. The RDC claimed the land the building was on belonged to the government and was earmarked for a health center. The People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) said it had occupied the premises for over fifty years up until that time.

A post on the APNU+AFC official Facebook page said that “The General Secretary of the PNCR, Dawn Hastings-Williams, and Attorney Darren Wade traveled to Lethem to carry out a decision of the PNCR Central Executive Meeting held yesterday. Together with local party leadership and members, she oversaw the reoccupation and reclaiming of the PNCR Lethem Office.”

The statement added, “A meeting was held in the demolished building and local party members cooked and held other activities in the party office compound. Party members also began to reconstruct the building where the damage was done.” Installed Vice President and People’s Progressive Party’s (PPP) General Secretary Bharrat Jagdeo said in a recent press conference that destruction at the PNCR’s Lethem office was not politically driven but did allege the property belonged to the state and also stated that several notices were served on the PNCR to vacate the premises.
