“The prices keep climbing and the people clinging for survival” – MP Flue-Bess tells House

Member of Parliament Hon. Nima Flue-Bess opened Budget Debate 2023 for the Parliamentary Opposition with a presentation that showed the budgets over the last two years of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) have accomplished the opposite of their stated intention. The MP with the responsibility of the East Bank stated, “Since the PPP government was placed into office in 2020, their first Budget, a plan for prosperity resulted in the destruction of the people at Success. East Coast.”

The Member of Parliament in her impassioned speech stated, “Their second Budget in 2021 was set as a pathway to recovery with economic dynamism and resilience. But what we saw was the average Guyanese being resilient to the economic doom.” Guyana’s cost of living has been escalating with inflation pegged at close to eight percent. Flue-Bess noted the rising cost of commodities currently in the marketplace, lamenting that items like shallot and sugar have escalated. “The prices keep climbing and the people clinging for survival,” the MP said.

MP Bess said that the Guyanese people need “prosperity”. The MP said this means that every Guyanese will be treated equally and be respected and that resources would be distributed fairly. People must live in peace and the rights of people and their liberties must be protected. MP Flue-Bess witnessed firsthand when the PPP regime broke down countless homes of poor people in Caneview, Mocha, and the now added burden they are now faced with every day.

The MP said, “It is alarming to note that we sit in this house and we pass budgets. Budgets are to bring hope to people, not to destroy their lives of people. Right through my constituency, Mr. Speaker, several actions of marginalization, disrespect, and injustice continue,” MP Bess stated.
