Making good on a promise to Wendy Williams of Region 6, East Berbice-Corentyne, President Irfaan Ali today handed over a house to the mother of three who fell on hard time after her husband was killed in a tractor accident in the rice fields where he worked to provide for his family. The tractor he was driving toppled, pinning him underneath.
“We can only imagine the pain, grief, and sorrow of this mother and three children,” President Ali told those who gathered for the Christmas morning event. “One of the missions of Men on Mission is to reach out to people who are in these situations, who require that of humanity, that love of community, that love that let us understand that we are part of one human family,” the head of state said.
“So there are two families in this region that the Men on Mission team sought out because of their different challenges. And I want you to know that while the pain of losing your husband, your father is immense, you have the love and support of a community and a country, and today is a demonstration of that love,” Ali to Williams.
The President said the initiative was made possible by one Mr. Peter Lewis, and Mr. Antar .and the Private Sector. “Mr. peter Lewis took completely the cost of this building, the land was donated by the government and the, and the house was given at a cost in excess of $5 million. And Mr.Antar, who furnished this home completely, I think we ought to give them a big round of applause for this great, great gift,” Ali acknowledged.
He said he was very pleased to be able on Christmas morning to spread this joy with a family “who has had too much pain and sorrow”. He said this was a reminder “There is hope in the family of humanity. There is hope in this world. Not only are we interested in her getting into our own home, but this mother also will now be employed under the temporary employment program of the government so that she’ll be able to support her three children”
