Days of strike action of the boat operators of the Stabroek to Vreed-en-Hoop route have come to an end much to the relief of commuters. The Office of the President (OP) is reporting that President Irfaan Ali brokered a deal with the speedboat operators and fares will remain at $100 per person.
“The decision was made after the Head of State met with members of the Demerara River Speed Boat Association at the National Track and Field Centre in Leonora this evening. The President committed to helping improve the service of the speedboat operators and the landing area while continuously aiding their growth,” according to a statement on OP’s Facebook page
According to the statement issued, “Lallbachan Babulal, Vice President of the Demerara River Speed Boat Association, expressed satisfaction with the meeting and said members are looking forward to working with the President to improve the service.” When Credible Sources visited the Georgetown stelling today the operations were no longer being housed at the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) port but were back behind Stabroek Market area and things seemed back to normal.
