Speed Boat operators between the Stabroek to Vreed-en-Hoop route are on strike after the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) issued a notice that there will be no increase in passenger fares a week ago.
The Coast Guard boats have since started transporting passengers across the Demerara River, but with limited capacity for passengers. Traffic congestion has increased on the Demerara Harbour Bridge due to the strike.
The Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn expressed surprise that the situation escalated, with no notice and without the opportunity to consult with the speedboat operators. Bartica boat operators have also stepped in to help stranded passengers. The boat ride over to Region three is now free.
