The Jamaica Bar Association says the arrest of Attorney at Law Tamieka Clarke is an “assault on the legal profession” and it is “concerned” about the developments in Guyana under the Peoples’ Progressive Party regime.
Attorney Clarke was arrested while advising her client of his right to remain silent as he was at the time being quizzed by agents of the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU). The Bar Association said in its statement, “we condemn this action”.
“This an attack on the fundamental principles of the rule of law” the Associations stated. “The gross encroachment by the State has the result of undermining the rule of law and we shall remain carefully attentive in this cause,” the statement said.
The Jamaica Bar Association says it awaits the official position of the Guyanese Commissioner of Police.
