Charandass’ Recall: “President Ali knew a long time ago” -AFC

The Alliance For Change is adamant President Irfaan Ali, who yesterday recalled Guyana High Commissioner to India Charrandas Persaud, know all along of his egregious actions. The party said in a statement today, “The fact that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sought to de-escalate and dismiss that violent abuse of an Indian woman caring for animals by its missive of 25th October 2022, when it cavalierly concluded that “this matter is closed,” is shameless.”

The AFC stated, “…to determine so by utilising a reasoning that the incident happened over a year ago and that the “allegations… were not substantiated” is more despicable. This alone is reason enough to recall Minister Todd. But Minister Todd will not be removed because if that happens the beans will be spilled concerning how the President knew of the video and Ms. Ghosh’s statement since September last year; and, also how the Ministry’s statement of 25th October 2022 did pass the President’s desk before its release.”

The High Commissioner to India resigned after the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) led administration expressed no confidence in him continuing in his post, under public pressure. A lewd and expletive-filled video when viral on social media recently of Persaud vilifying a woman, Sonya Ghosh, who had gone to his residence in India inquiring of a dog.

The woman an animal rights activist and an Associate Professor in the Department of English, CVS, Delhi University, related in a statement to the Station House Officer, Vasant Kunj South, New Delhi that she regularly feeds street dogs in the area where Guyana’s High Commissioner lives.

The statement said, “On the evening of 1st August, 2021, the [Ghosh] was out to feed the stray dogs along with her driver and [two] helpers as per routine and that on the said Road the undersigned regularly feeds a dog owned by the gardener of the harasser [Persaud].

The woman had enquired at the home from security the whereabouts of the dog and was in the process of leaving she was allegedly verbally attacked by Persaud. “The moment [Ghosh] exited the premises from the gate, she heard someone behind her shouting, “Fuck You” “Bitch” “Fuck off”. The undersigned was startled by the sudden abuses.”

“The AFC condemns the hypocrisy from the President and his Minister and the attempt to hold on to a character without any reputation, and one who certainly never merited such high office as High Commissioner to India”, the party stated.
