A Barbados Member of Parliament (MP) and member of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) is in serious trouble. The MP for St Michael North West Neil Rowe is expected to appear in the Oistins Magistrate’s Court today on the charge of rape. Rowe, 43, has been in police custody for the past day being investigated on sexual assault allegations. Barbados Nation News reports that Police Public Relations Officer Inspector Rodney Inniss (ag), confirmed that Rowe of #658 Kingsland Terrace, Christ Church has been charged.

In Guyana the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) member and activist Ossie Rogers was caught on the CCTV camera of a Bath supermarket, Region 3, brutally assaulting Varsha Bharrat. Rogers, who resides in the United States, was allowed to fly out of Guyana earlier than scheduled to leave to avoid police prosecution. The PPP regime has otherwise stayed absolutely silent on the issue.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley stated on Saturday at the Barbados Labour Party Annual General Conference, “It is not our place to intervene in the process of justice, but rather to secure the integrity of the critical institutions that preserve the rights of the individual in this country, and to ensure law order and indeed, good governance in Barbados”.

PM Mottley, growing in stature as a global voice because of her leadership style, said, “I have every confidence in the independence and the integrity of our judiciary, and I asked, therefore, that we do not rush to judgment.” Mottley also disclosed that Member of Parliament for St. Thomas Cynthia Forde would be nominated for the position of Deputy Speaker in the House of Assembly on Tuesday, formerly held by MP Rowe.
