Students at some secondary schools will be going to class in tents as the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) regime grapples with overcrowding in its school population. East Ruimveldt Secondary School is one such school faced with this situation.
Credible Sources spoke with several teachers at the school who agreed to speak with our publication on the basis of anonymity in fear of victimization. One teacher told us “The electricity was fluctuating on and off all day and the heat was too much for both children and teachers to manage so we were forced to take the students outside of the tents to teach.”

Another teacher related that the Ministry of Education continues to send a “very large amount of students and we don’t have enough classrooms to house all the students so most of the classrooms have forty-something students in each class.”
A teacher reported, “This term they sent about a hundred and seventy students and we had nowhere to place them, and instead of having three form ones as usual we had to split the students into six form ones this term.”

“We were asking for a shift rotation system but apparently the PTA raise the issue and they refuse to do the shift rotation and decided that they are going to get some tents from the Guyana Defense Force so that all the students can come out everyday, whole day,” a teacher related.
The regime in recent days has been faced with several challenges across the educational system. Students at Aroaima / Hururu recently protested the poor transportation system. Parents and teachers at Santa Rosa protested the terrible state of the school building which they contend cannot manage the growing number of students.
