The People’s Progressive Party’s (PPP) adopted David Granger’s National Schools Feeding Program appears to be in shambles. The PPP’s iteration dubbed ‘Operation Bread and Drink’ in its current configuration, parents complain, lacks quality, consistency, and variety.
‘Operation Bread and Drink’ was recently launched in Linden, Region 10, Upper Demerara-Berbice, and featured a bread-and-butter combo labeled “Jennifer’s Cater Service”, paired with a drink beverage. However, parents in Region 6, East Berbice-Corentyne, have complained of ‘homemade drink’ being brought to the schools in perused soda bottles. Additionally, parents in Region 3, Essequibo Islands/West Demerara, told our publication of “drink poured into plastic bags” the hygienic nature of which leaves much to be desired.
At a particular school in Region 3, a parent reported, “Cool-down drink in plastic bags were given to the students, and mosquito larvae was found in the bag. It was brought to the HMs attention.”
A brainchild of former President David Granger, the APNU+AFC Five ‘B’s Initiative was launched soon after the APNU+AFC Government took office in 2015. The program which involved providing school children with Breakfast, Books, Bicycles, Boats, and Buses saw the government collaborate with several private sector organizations to provide school children with a healthy breakfast every morning.
