Guyana recorded a total of twenty-two (22) murders in August. It was one of the bloodiest months in the country’s history. On the first day of August 2022, the police reported that 33-year-old Rodwell Phillips of Broad Street, Charlestown, was found chopped to death on the La Penitence Public Road in Georgetown. Hours later, businessman Vickram Seubarran of East Canje, Berbice was found dead on the kitchen floor of his home with a knife in his back.
Then on August 4, 2022, Credible Sources reported that 18-year-old Jude Christino was stabbed to death during a heated argument at Kumaka WaterFront, North West District. Christino was reportedly chased by two men, beaten, and stabbed to death. Police have since charged 22-year-old Wayne Da Silva called ‘Monkey Man’ and another man with Christino murder.
On August 5 2022, Angraj Kumar Indrapaul, a 59-year-old watchman at the Rose Hall Estate was found floating in a canal nearby his workplace. Initially, his death was suspected to be caused by drowning but when an autopsy confirmed he was strangled, his co-worker, who is also a pandit, confessed that he murdered him.
On Tuesday, August 9, 2022, a Credible Sources article titled: ‘Bloody Monday’ reported the murder of two women and the killing of a Venezuelan national by a sand truck on the East Bank Public Road.
On August 8, 2022, as well 24-year-old Cindy Ramchandar of Number 47 Village, Corentyne, Berbice was stabbed to death by her ex-husband with whom she had separated two months earlier. Her alleged killer was identified as Suraj Ganpat of Cumberland Village, East Canje. He later turned himself in to the police and has been charged for the murder of his wife. He is presently on remand awaiting trial.
On that same day another woman was murdered, 28 years old Vanessa Anderson, a mother of three and a resident of B- Field Sophia. She was stabbed to death after an alleged confrontation with two women said to be sisters. The sisters – Jamacy Jason, 21, and Tiffine Greaves, 29 – were charged and remanded for Anderson’s murder on August 11.
Then the Kaieteur News reported that Francisco Simosa, a Venezuelan national was also killed around 5:30hrs on August 8, 2022, after a truck reversed and crushed him along the Sarah Johanna Public Road on the East Bank of Demerara.
According to the report he was heading to work at Bounty Farm and was waiting for a bus at the corner of the road when the truck suddenly reversed.
A day earlier, Sunday, Hog Island farmer and businessman Romeo Randolph also known as “Fine Boy ” was found floating in the Essequibo River around 8:00hrs. The 36-year-old who was planning to celebrate his birthday on Monday 8th, was reported missing by family members on Thursday 4th after he didn’t return home from work. His murder remains unsolved.
The attempted execution of three men on August 9, 2022, by masked men along the Melanie Public Road, East Coast Demerara, adds to the high number of bloodshed recorded in August. On August 11, 200, there were three reported cases of murders all across the country.
Additionally, a decomposing body was found floating in the Demerara River and another in a trench at Montrose, East Coast Demerara, on the morning of August 11, 2022. There hasn’t been any report from the police on the identification of the two men.
Later in the evening, at around 22:00 hrs Kareem Kayum was stabbed by a 21-year-old University of Guyana student, Afzal Deendial, on Woodford Ave. Georgetown. The suspect who was a close friend of the now-dead man, has since been charged and remanded to prison.
On August 12, 2022, the killings continued with the murder of Venezuelan National Rosmari Revolledo. She was shot and killed at Mowaise Landing. The suspect in that murder Linden Fordyce has since been arrested after he turned himself into the Linden Police Station in the company of his Lawyer a few days later.
On August 13, 2022, police again reported that a young man, 20-year-old Owen Young, lost his life after being stabbed during an argument at Perseverance, East Bank Demerara. Two suspects have since been arrested and charged with his murder. On August 15, 2022, 18-year-old Donald Gibson was stabbed to death during a street brawl at Parika. The suspect in his murder was also arrested and charged.
The Kaieteur News on August 25, 2022, reported that a family altercation at Well Road, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, ended with a 50-year-old man being killed and his 20-year-old relative in the police lockups under investigation.
The dead man was identified as Colin Wishart and according to police the altercation that claimed his life took place around 14:00hrs. His relative, now in the custody of police, told investigators that Wishart had begun behaving disorderly around 03:00hrs that morning. He claimed that the man had started hitting the walls of their home disturbing him and other family members and the neighbours close by.
On August 29th, we reported that a former employee of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and mother of a six-year-old boy was on Friday, August 26, 2022, stabbed to death by her common-law husband during an argument.
Dead, is 28-year-old Tacina Dazzel of La Bonne Intention (LBI), East Coast Demerara (ECD). Her reputed husband and owner of Go-Local Guyana Quincy Roache was later arrested at a friend’s house in Sophia in relation to her death. Dazzel was reportedly stabbed thirteen (13) times.
On Saturday, August 27, 2022, the skeletal remains, believed to be that of a man, were discovered on the Eversham foreshore, Corentyne, Berbice. The discovery was made by an Eversham villager who contacted the police.
It is believed that the remains may be that of Wazir Shaw, a Surinamese fisherman, who went missing earlier this month. Shaw, according to reports, had left to go fishing on August 9, 2022, in Suriname waters.
Two days later, on Monday, August 29, 2022, the skeletal remains of a human were found in the vicinity of Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara (WBD). The discovery was made by a doctor and his friends while they were catching crab along the foreshore.
On Tuesday, August 30, 2022, the Kaieteur News again reported another murder. According to the report, an evening of fun turned deadly at Kimbia, Upper Berbice River after a 22-year-old man was chopped to death when he tried to save his 18-year-old relative from a cutlass attack.
Dead is Selmon King of Wairuni, Berbice River. His relative, 18-year-old Shane Osborne also of the said village suffered a severed hand from the wrist and a chop wound to the jaw. He is currently hospitalized at the New Amsterdam Hospital in a critical state and was expected to undergo surgery, the newspaper reported.
Strangely, the Police Force has not released any crime statistics for 2022 nor have they provided any comparative analysis to 2021.
