Nandlall not sure Gov’t future funding of IDPADA-G

The Jagdeo/Ali regime seems to be set to pull the plug on funding for the International Decade for People of African Descent Assembly (IDAPADA-G). This is according to remarks made by the Attorney-General, Anil Nandlall during a recent appearance on the ‘The Freddie-Gildharie Show’. After being pressed by the moderators on whether the government will continue to fund IDPADA-G, the AG mentioned that ‘I am not sure, the debate is still out in the public domain’.

The International Decade of People for African Descent Assembly (IDPAGA-G) has incurred the wrath of the government because senior members of the organization planned a conference that was themed, ‘The Emerging Apartheid State’. Ever since this development, the Jagdeo/Ali regime has embarked on a crusade against this organization which represents the interest of Afro-Guyanese.

The UN General Assembly, by its resolution 68/237 of 23 December 2013, proclaimed the International Decade for People of African Descent commencing 1 January 2015 and ending on 31 December 2024, with the theme “People of African descent: recognition, justice and development”.

As result, all UN countries had to enact a national program to execute this resolution. In the case of Guyana, it took the form of IDPAGA-G. The organization exists because of a binding UN resolution, if the Jagdeo/Ali regime cuts the funding for this organization, Guyana could be in trouble with its treaty obligations.
