“Calls for GECOM Chair to go is not a threat, PPP did it in 2015 after they lost”-Norton

Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton in a recent press conference repeated his call for the Chairwoman of GECOM to step aside in the interest of fairness and impartiality.

The leader also rubbishes statements by installed Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo that he is threatening the Chairwoman of GECOM Claudette Singh and that the Police should investigate his statement.

“There is no threat, and there is nothing to investigate…. all I did was call for the GECOM Chair to resign because she votes with the PPP Commissioners on all matters, she is not independent.”

As such, “a call for the Chairman of GECOM to go is not a threat, and in 2015 after the PPP lost, Bharrat Jagdeo called for Steve Surujballuy to go and it wasn’t considered a threat,” Norton recalled.

Norton again reminded that the Elections Commission Chair must be impartial. “Clearly what she is doing is going in whatever direction the People’s Progressive Party goes and therefore she is not fit to be Chairman of the Elections Commission, ” the Opposition Leader insisted.

The Leader of the Opposition said his calls for Justice Singh’s resignation is as a direct result of how she conducts the business of the Elections body especially when it comes to voting. Mr. Norton maintains his position that it is time for Claudette Singh to move on from the Elections Commission.

“There is no threat in saying that the Chairman of GECOM votes every time with the PPP and therefore she does not bring the impartially that is expected of a Chairman of the Elections Commission and therefore she should go. There is no threat in that. What it does is to point out that the Elections Commission is a constitutional body and what is expected is that he/she whoever chairs it will operate in an impartial way, will operate independently,” Mr. Norton said.

Mr. Norton contended that the only person that should be investigated is Bharrat Jagdeo himself. Since according to Norton there is plenty of evidence to investigate, including documented allegations of corruption and bribery.

Guyana’s reputation continues to take a beating ever since that explosive undercover investigative documentary by Vice News earlier this year in which Chinese businessman, Mr. Su alleged that Vice president Bharrat Jagdeo takes brides. The documentary, which Captured some top Chinese and local businessmen on tape boasting of paying millions in bribes to the local politician, has been viewed over a million times on YouTube.

In one of the infamous clips which were recorded in the living room of VP Jagdeo, he could be heard telling the undercover investigators that “Su hands all the agreements.”
