‘There has been apartheid, there is apartheid’ -Freddie Kissoon

Freddie Kissoon believes that Guyana has experienced the Apartheid system, but he believes that the only ethnic group that experienced this system are Indo-Guyanese. The political scientist and columnist made these remarks in direct response to accusations from national Afro-Guyanese leaders who are of the view that there is an emerging Apartheid state in Guyana.

Speaking on his weekly program, ‘The Gildharie-Freddie Show’, the former University of Guyana lecturer argued passionately that Indo-Guyanese have been the victims of Apartheid and it is only their circumstance that should be regarded as an Apartheid situation.

Recently, the word Apartheid has regained currency in the national conversation because for its annual discourse on the state of Afro-Guyanese, the Cuffy 250 Committee themed the conference, ‘The Emerging Apartheid State’.

This resulted in an onslaught from the Government and the International Decade for People of African Descent Assembly (IDPADA-G) which is accused of being in collusion with the Cuffy 250 Committee and received the wrath of the Jagdeo-Ali regime.

Apartheid (Afrikaans: “apartness”) was the racist system practiced by the Government of South Africa during the 1980s. It entailed racial segregation between the ruling white minority and the nonwhite majority.
