UK’s David Lammy blanks PPP’s NRF Board

The Natural Resource Fund (NRF) Act was rammed through the National Assembly of Guyana in December 2021, resulting in ongoing litigation in the courts.

Five months later the members of the NRF Board were appointed and now four months after that, the Members of the Board are being sworn in. All except the United Kingdom Parliamentarian David Lammy, who has Guyanese roots.

During his remarks at the ceremony installed President Irfaan Ali seemed at a loss for words as he reported to those gathered “Due to changes in his requirement at home he has asked us not to play a part on this Board at this time”. The former Chancellor of the University of Guyana Campton Bourne replaces MP Lammy.

Without the approval of a Board, the People’s Progressive Party regime has withdrawn more than 80 Billion dollars from the NRF to finance the 2022 budget. However, the PPP clearly ignores the legal requirement that money taken from the NRF must be used for specific development projects and emergencies.
