Residents of Region 10, Upper Demerara-Upper Berbice, are angry at the quality of infrastructural work being undertaken in the Region.
Over the past few weeks, residents blocked the Wismar Access Road over the slothfulness of the rehabilitation of roads in the area. The contractor’s execution of the project had been flagged in the past by the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) for shoddy work resulting in a drain at Silvertown collapsing shortly after construction.
“Since 2021 the RDC wrote the ministries of Public Works, and Housing for them to upgrade the roads in Amelia’s Ward, Wisroc, and other areas. However, we are concerned that not a single road constructed under Minister Juan Edghill has lasted six months without damage,” one regional official commented on the condition of anonymity.
At Kara Kara, one resident Jamal Smith says the “Contractor came in and did the project like a thief in the night.” When our publication visited the area the quality of the road, construction and design left much to be desired. “By the time we went to bed and got up, blam, road done,” recounted an angry Jean Marcus.
A project at Four Corner Access Road sees scores of Venezuelans employed much to the dismay of residents possessing the necessary skills but often overlooked by contractors who are brought into the Region for such construction.
