‘Mr. President, my life is in danger’ -Sergeant Bascom seeks protection from the President

Today marks one week since Police Sergeant Dion Bascom made shocking allegations against senior members of the Guyana Police Force, alleging that senior members of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) are involved in the murder cover-up of Ricardo Fagundes, aka “Paper-shorts”.

Recently during a live discussion on Straight Up 107.1 FM with Host Mark Benschop, Nigel Hughes the Lawyer representing Dion Bascom said that he is yet to receive a response from President Ali to a letter from his client requesting the protection of himself and his family. The letter, which was delivered on Monday, August 15, 2022, contains statements written by Sergeant Bascom detailing his claims of corruption and cover-up in the Guyana Police Force (GPF).

News Source Guyana is also reported the President as telling the media that he believes a professional investigation needs to be done but is still to see the letter that was sent to him.

The President is quoted as saying, “In this particular case, I have made it clear that everything must be done professionally. To be honest, I have not seen the letter as yet, I am not saying the letter was not sent I have not seen it as yet, I have not addressed my mind to the letter, because I have not seen the contents, but I don’t shy away from addressing these issues.”

On the question of whether he will be granting the request for witness protection, the President said he must first see what is being asked of him and will decide. He said he is not opposed to granting protection to Mr. Bascom.

“I won’t say that I am against it, I have to see what the content of the letter is, what is the nature of what I’m being asked for but as I said this system must provide an even platform for everybody, it must provide a socially just platform for everyone and in that context, I will make my decision,” President said.

Bascom’s Attorney Nigel Hughes said the letter was sent to the President’s office on Monday and was signed by a ‘Lall’ as having been received by his office.
