GPF making moves to “fire” Mr. Bascom, accuses him of being compromised -Attorney

The Attorney-at-law representing Dion Bascom has expressed concern that the Guyana Police Force (GPF) might be in the process of engineering the firing of him from the Force. Attorney at Law Nigel Hughes during an interview last evening with Mr. Rickford Burke said that it is clear that the intention of the police leadership is to leave Bascom unprotected and vulnerable to threats to his life.

Hughes believes that from the content of a statement released last evening by Police Commissioner (ag) Clifton Hicken that the Force is seeking to get rid of Bascom, rather than focusing its investigation on solving the murder of Ricardo Fagundes.

News Source Guyana is reporting that Hicken in a press statement last night said that Police Detective Sergeant Dion Bascom has refused to submit himself to any investigation by the Police.

Similarly, Hicken said Bascom has also refused to provide any evidence to the Police to back up his allegations that senior police officials at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) have been involved in covering up the probe into the execution-style murder of biker Ricardo Fagundes and the connection to a city businessman and his security agent.

Nigel Hughes described the statement by the Top Cop as “unbelievable.” Hughes said that Bascom has already submitted a written statement of what he knows to the President and to the Commissioner of Police himself.  Further, the lawyer stated that he nor his Client were ever contacted by the police to provide any evidence to investigators.

The Commissioner of Police (ag.) went on in his statement to describe the allegations made by the police sergeant as unfounded. He said it is also unfortunate that the allegations have publicly involved senior members of the Police Force.

Meanwhile, calls continue to mount for an independent investigation into the claims made by the detective. The Leader of the Opposition Aubrey Norton on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, joined in supporting calls for an independent investigation into Bascom’s allegations.

Norton posited that such investigation should be conducted by independent international experts, and be launched promptly, without the usual game-playing by the government or the police high command, and extend to Detective Bascom the protections and other measures common to whistle-blowing arrangements.

Bascom’s lawyer believes that Statements by the Acting Police Commissioner seem to suggest that the Force is moving full steam ahead with charges against Bascom for breach of the Code of Conduct of the Guyana Police Force over his public statements.

Sergeant Bascom has repeatedly stated that he is standing by his story and he has brushed aside threats of lawsuits from Police Superintendent Mitchell Caesar, businessman Azruddin Mohamed and the businessman’s security agent Mark Richmond.
