Police Sergeant Dion Bascom was arrested at a house in Norton Street on August 8, 2022, along with other persons including with 19-year-old female and known drug dealer Andre Clarke, when police raided the premises and found what they later alleged was the prohibited substance, cocaine. Akeem Lashley, one of the arrested persons, and Clarke have since been charged, fined, and sentenced with Clarke being handed a four-year prison sentence.
On August 11, 2022, Sergent Bascom in a Facebook ‘live’ tirade leveled bombshell allegations against businessman Azruddin Mohamed, an agent of the Mohameds family business, Mark Richmond, and Guyana Police Force’s Deputy Head of the Guyana Police Force’s Major Crimes Unit, Superintendent Mitchell Caesar, and complained also of his treatment after the arrest.
Bascom alleges that they were involved in the interference and cover-up of circumstances in the murder of popular gold dealer and biker Ricardo Fagundes, a.k.a ‘Paper Shorts’. Fagundes was gunned down outside Palm Court, in March 2021, where he had earlier been a patron with colleague convict Roger Khan.
On August 12, 2022, the Law firm Poonai & Poonai served three letters on Bascom as it now represents all three persons named by Bascom. In the instance of Superintendent Caesar, the firm states the allegations against its client is both “libelous and slanderous” and aimed at defaming Caesar. It says also that allegations against Azruddin Mohamed are “untrue and defamatory”.
Mohamed’s Enterprise, Azruddin Mohamed’s family business, on August 13, 2022, issued a statement that Bascom’s allegations “are very distressing and are aimed at tarnishing our reputation”, while not denying that Richmond works for the company. “Mohamed’s Enterprise was never subjected to any investigation related to the crime,” a company statement reads.
Poonai and Poonai wants Bascom to retract his statements and publicly apologize or face hefty lawsuits by all three men. In a new video on Facebook, Saturday, August 13, 2022, Bascom says he stands by everything he had previously said. It has been reported that the GPF’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) is now investigating Bascom’s allegations.
