-RDC Chairman promises future funding
On Friday, August 12, 2022, twenty-six (26) participants graduated from courses in the introduction to computers (Computers Made Easy) and Media Graphics design. The four-week training program was coordinated by Member of Parliament (MP) Devin Sears, who is an ICT expert who has lectured on computer science for more than a decade.
‘Computers Made Easy’ introduced to participants computer concepts, including fundamental functions and operations of the computer. Topics included identification of hardware components, basic computer operations, security issues, and use of Microsoft Office software applications.
The course ‘Introduction to Media Graphics Design’ allowed students to learn and apply the fundamentals of various software applications (such as Photoshop, Audition and Premiere Pro), image editing, voice-overs, video editing and graphic animation. The course also allowed students exposure to advertising and marketing projects to coordinate technical skills with organization, management, communication, ethics and teamwork, according to a media release.
During the simple graduation ceremony, participants expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to develop their skills and learn alternative ways to earn through media design. Corretta Braithwaite Walton, a participant, said “I am in my 50s but never appreciated the need of using computers; until I realized how the world is advancing and I cannot afford to be left behind.”
Another student, Jayden Smith, noted “The use of MS Excel was a challenge but now it is a breeze, I now have masted the use of functions and creating graphs.” While popular Linden media personality Kady Sears stated that, “Being a radio presenter, I have added to my skill set, recording and editing my own voice-overs, videos and designing of prints which I am now able to diversify.”
In offering remarks on the courses MP Sears encouraged the graduates to not settle for less, to aim high in pursuit of perfecting their skill and efficiency. “Our world is evolving and continues to embrace the technological era and the most we can do as Guyanese is retool, train and adapt; Programmes like these are geared towards ensuring our country has a skilled workforce.”
“He further went on to mention that this is the first of several continuous ICT training Programmes he will be coordinating and tutoring throughout the country with key focus of rural communities. Sears thanked the Regional Chairman’s Office through which the programme was executed, and facilitating Institute, Linden Technical Institute and supporting staff,” the release stated.
In his feature address to the graduates, Regional Chairman Deron Adams on behalf of Region 10 congratulated the participants on their accomplishments which falls in line with the Region’s push for the development of a strong and versatile ICT sector. He believes programmes such as these must garner bipartisan support since it focuses on education and ultimately community development. Mr. Adams committed through his office to budget funds in 2023 to expand the programme.
In delivering the charge to the graduates, former Head Teacher and Gospel Minister Cleveland Thomas stated that the sky no longer is the limit, you have to look beyond, apply yourself and push, maybe one day you will become an international producer at major networks, or marketing for major companies. Never settle for less.
The ceremony was hosted in the Linden Technical Institute (LTI) auditorium and was attended by parents, LTI representatives and the media.
