The Alliance For Change (AFC) at its weekly press conference, Friday, August 12, 2022, called on the Government to increase the wages and salaries of Public Services workers so as to boost their spending power amid high inflation.
AFC Member of Parliament and Shadow Finance Minister Juretha Fernandes reminded, that back in 2016 when the country didn’t have oil money, the then PPP Opposition called on the APNU+AFC Government to give public Servants a 50% Salary increase.
She explained that so far for 2022 the Government has already budgeted nearly $600 billion dollars for spending, but nothing for public Servants.
The Guyana Trade Union Congress (GTUC) has since threatened to take the Ali-led PPP Government to court for its refusal to grant Public Service workers a proper salary increase since taking office two years ago.
