On Sunday, Emancipation-eve, at the sod turning ceremony for the pediatric and maternal hospital at Ogle, East Coast Demerara, President Irfaan Ali fired his first salvo at Congressman Hakeem Jeffries. Going off script and in grandiloquence, Ali told the audience that he met with all those who he requested to meet in Washington.
On the heels of that announcement, he alluded to the case of Congressman Jeffries. He informed listeners that he requested the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to write the Congressman. He further noted that the Congressman declined to meet. The President went on to lament that the only reason that he can see for the decline is that the congressman is ‘playing politics with the country’. Congressman Albio Sires shared similar views last year.
Congressman Jeffries has flagged discrimination and racist policies by the Jagdeo/Ali regime. Added to this, in June 2021, Democratic Congressman, Hank Johnson became the second American congressman to have publicly issued a call for everyone to be included in decision-making.
US Congressman Hakeem Jeffries who represents parts of Brooklyn and Queens, New York, has demanded an end to racial discrimination and the need for all Guyanese to benefit from the country’s wealth. This was coupled with numerous concerns and reports by various branches of the US government.
This posture by numerous members of the US Congress has sparked tense relations between the Jagdeo/Ali regime and key members of the US Congress.
