Again the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Members of Parliament who have been appointed to serve the Guyanese people as members of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), have made it a regular practice to not show up to their jobs. The PAC is the key institution responsible for the scrutiny of government spending.
Today makes the third consecutive meeting of the PAC at which the PPP MPs were a no-show. Four meetings in total since that dark day when they unilaterally amended the Standing Orders.
In the past, this would not prevent the PAC from performing its duties, but the PPP has amended the Standing Orders of the Parliament of Guyana to make their MP’s seemingly optional attendance a mandatory requirement for the PAC to meet and work. This is meant to prevent the PAC from being able to do its work.
This underhanded sabotage of one of the pillars of Guyanese democracy has left Guyana exposed to a heightened risk of large-scale corruption. Perhaps lack of oversight for corrupt activities might just be the PPP’s exact intention. It is, after all, difficult to give the friends and family of the PPP “all the support” if the PAC can function as intended by the authors of the constitution.
