In 2022 the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) is reporting its worst sugar production in history while billions are being pumped into the collapsing sugar industry. Yet, in spite of the blank cheques provided to GuySoCo by the government, Guyana is currently experiencing a severe sugar shortage.
Guyanese have historically consumed between 30kg-40kg of sugar per capita per year. That totals between 22,000 tons-30,000 tons of sugar per year. With GuySuCo’s first crop producing just 13,076 tons of Sugar, it is clear that GuySuCo will barely meet the demands of the domestic market in 2022.
With GuySuCo holding contractual obligations to supply international consumers there will continue to be a significant risk of supply shortages in the local market.
The PPP’s gross mismanagement of the sector continues to cripple the Guyana Sugar Corporation. Now, after centuries of being a major sugar exporter, Guyana is on the brink of having to import sugar to meet its domestic demand.
GuySuCo has committed to increasing packaging at the Uitvlugt Estate to help ease the shortage while they simultaneously deny the very existence of the shortage itself.
