According to the Bank of Guyana’s quarterly report, there was a 29.7% increase in income tax revenue for the first quarter of 2022. Income tax revenue increased from G$25.9 billion in the first quarter of 2021 to G$33.595 billion in the same period for 2022.
In 2019, under the APNU+AFC government, revenues from income tax totalled G$21.6 billion for the first quarter. That shows a total increase of 55.5% in the tax burden being placed on Guyanese workers since the PPP came to power.
With no meaningful increase in salaries and over 5,000 Guyanese losing their jobs since the PPP returned to power, it is clear that Guyanese workers are not earning 55.5% more income. More so, when combined with inflation and wage stagnation, Guyanese are struggling to support their families. A recent International Republican Institute (IRI) poll showed that 22% of Guyanese have trouble feeding themselves and their families.
