Rice production in Guyana under the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) administration for the first quarter of 2022 is 53.1% lower than production for the same period in 2021. This is according to the quarterly report for the first quarter of 2022 published by the Bank of Guyana.
The PPP has attempted to blame anything and everything, from floods to global fertilizer supply shortages, for the hard times facing the industry under their stewardship. Though the rainy seasons in Guyana are a routine weather feature, and increasingly severe weather patterns were predicted decades ago, the PPP appears to have settled on making the rains the primary target of their blame.
“We had better production with worse rains,” said the leader of the Guyana Agriculture Workers Union (GAWU) when responding to President Ali’s attempt to blame the heavy rains for all the woes of the agriculture sector. Diligent use of irrigation and vigilant preparation proved effective in protecting the agriculture sector under the APNU+AFC government and the PPP’s failure to continue that work is the primary cause of the current industry downturn.
