Thousands block roads demanding justice for Quindon Bacchus

In what turned out to be the biggest protest in recent memory, thousands took to the streets demanding justice for Quindon Bacchus who was killed by the police in what many believe to be a clear example of extra judicial killings returning under the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) regime.

The crowd gathered at Golden Grove village on the East Coast of Demerara and proceeded to march down the main public highway, gaining momentum and growing larger as they marched. After marching for 6 miles (9.6 km), the crowd stopped at Mon Repos then quickly pulled back to Buxton village.

Riot police did not attempt to block the march until they reached Mon Repos. With the crowd in Mon Repos, the police decided to block the road at Triumph village. This forced the large crowd to remain at Mon Repos, where a few bad elements decided to take advantage of the chaos to loot some market stalls.

“It could have been me, my son or brother” one protester shouted, as chants of “Justice” filled the air. Photos of the killed young man were placed on roadblocks. No one has yet been formally charged with any wrongdoing in relation to the killing, but the protesters are determined that justice must be served.
