Amber Heard and Princess Williams: The Danger of False Accusations

As millions of women worldwide struggle to escape abuse and get justice for sexual assault, their struggle continues to be undermined by the actions of the few women who see accusations of sexual assault and abuse as tools they can use to attack or extort men.

The worst fact about sexual and domestic abuse is that the vast majority of cases remain unreported. Victims often fear reporting the abuse might lead to economic, social, and legal consequences. Victims often feel powerless. Laws are in place to provide protection for the victims and empower them to report their attackers but more still needs to be done.

Under these conditions, the impact of heavily publicized cases where women are found guilty of falsely accusing men of abuse and/or rape might have a significant negative impact on the likelihood of victims taking the much necessary step of reporting their abuse and seeking help. The very real fear that the victim will be blamed or accused of attacking the person they are accusing is something society needs to address if the percentage of cases reported is to be increased.

Both men and women need the protection of the law when they are falsely accused of crimes, but real victims need even more protection. This delicate balance is deeply damaged by the actions of the Princess Williams and Amber Heards of our society.
