In light of the explosive revelations by US media outfit, Vice News, the United States Embassy calls for a level playing field and accountability in Guyana. In a statement to News Source Guyana issued on June 20th, 2022, the embassy noted:
“The US has long been an advocate for anti-corruption and rule of law in Guyana, as well as a free press, consistent with Guyana’s laws, accountability is the soundest approach to maintain confidence in government and a level playing field for all investors”.
The statement sidestepped the allegations and substance in the video and did not call for an independent probe mentioned specifics. Given the US Embassy’s posture during the tenure of the Granger Administration and its activism during the elections, there was a reasonable expectation that these damning allegations would have received more attention.
In the damning report which aired on the US network Showtime, Vice News documented a sting operation in which the Vice President of Guyana is seen discussing investments with a potential investor at his home in Pradoville 2. His confidante and tenant, Su indicated to the potential investor that once a bribe is paid, he can have access to the government, and everything will be taken care of by ‘his boss’ who is widely believed to be VP Jagdeo.
The explosive documentary has triggered calls by civil society and the political Opposition for an investigation and the resignation of the VP to facilitate an independent probe. So far, the government has not issued an official statement on the matter.
