Mixed messages from David Patterson on Coalition’s future

As the Alliance For Change (AFC) enters its 7th National Conference, a rigorous biennial exercise with leadership elections at its heart, David Patterson, who is running for party Leader, has left the AFC’s future in the Coalition under his leadership in question.

“We cannot pretend that everything was great in the Coalition and continue full speed ahead,” said Patterson in a statement published on social media, on the eve of the party’s most consequential elections.

While Patterson plays the balancing act, key allies of Patterson have openly indicated that they are pushing for the AFC to exit the coalition.

Chairman of the East Bank chapter of the AFC Michael Carrington, who nominated Patterson for the post of party Leader, has indicated his clear intention to see the APNU+AFC Coalition come to an end. Carrington conveyed this to columnist and political activist Freddie Kissoon when they spoke on record recently.

It remains to be seen how Patterson’s and Carrington’s objectives align but is clear that Patterson is the candidate of choice for those who want to see the AFC exit the Coalition, a fate that many commentators argue will doom the AFC to an indefinite future out of power.

A recent poll, conducted by the popular evening program “In The Ring”, found that 78% of people want the AFC to remain in the Coalition.
