The PPP and their acolytes once marveled at the phrase: ‘The AFC is dead’. During the run-up to the 2020 elections, it appears that this was a deliberate political strategy to psychologically defeat AFC supporters.
The slogan was adopted at the level of the Central Exec of the PPP and it was filtered to the party’s messaging machinery. The phrase gained traction on social media, but it remained what it is, vacuous sloganeering detached from reality.
Lately, local political observers have noted that the engineered slogan has disappeared from the lips of the PPP bigwigs and completely gone from the lexicon of the supporters at the bottom of the totem pole.
Even though it was a short-sighted political strategy from the jump, it has failed because the AFC has proven its resilience. It is extremely difficult, if not impossible to kill a party that represents the aspiration of the people for politics of the center.
Lest we forget, the AFC was formed in 2005 by longing standing members of the big traditional parties. It was born out of the desire to move away from the same old politics which has left Guyana in a perpetual morass.
It was the endeavor of those who want a better Guyana that led to the establishment of this great movement. You cannot kill those wishes; it remains a quintessential Guyanese desire. As result, the AFC not only survives in 2022, but it thrives.
