Potato shortage in Guyana markets

The price for imported potatoes is set to increase following a nearly two weeks shortage in shops and supermarkets nationwide.

Investigations of the shortage has revealed that it may be far more widespread than it may seem. Of the six leading supermarkets in Georgetown, only two had potatoes on the shelves. Potatoe is presently being sold for $120 and $140 per pound in places like Linden and Berbice.

The Guyanese consumer continues to complain of the rising cost of living in the country. Only last week we reported on the sharp rise in the price of milk power on the shelves of supermarkets and shops across Guyana.

The shortage of potatoes represents yet another blow to the pockets of Guyanese consumers who will now be forced to use more expensive substitutes.

The PPP disastrous economic policies has been the major cause of the pain and suffering being experienced by Guyanese, says Leader of the Opposition Aubrey Norton at his weekly press conference a few weeks ago.

Since its installation to office in August of 2020, the PPP regime has come under strong criticism for its bad policies and economic mismanagement of Guyana. The party’s failure to effectively contain the disastrous inflation rate and rising unemployment has resulted in major discontent among the Guyanese people.

Member of Parliament Juretha Fernandes did warn of higher inflation during her Budget 2022 presentation.  She had told the Parliament that Budget 2022 is going to be a $400,000 tax on every citizen of Guyana and will lead to more economic hardship for citizens.
