Though many consider the pandemic to be over, the daily number of new cases of COVID-19 is on the rise. 65 new cases were recorded on May 17, 2022. This is over 6 times the average of 10 new cases per day recorded in April.
The spike in new cases recorded in Guyana comes as new cases are on a steady downward trend globally. Global covid cases peaked at over 3 million new cases per day at the height of the pandemic and now stand at 660,000 new cases per day.
Though it is still some distance from the national peak of over 1,000 cases per day, the current spike in cases reminds us of the need to take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the virus. Considering the current situation, perhaps the ending of the national mask mandate was premature.
As we are yet to understand the cause of the rapid increase in new cases, it is best that proper measures be taken to protect ourselves and our families. The pandemic is not yet over.
