-US State Department 2021 Country Reports (Guyana)
The United States of America has consistently declined any opportunity to label the Guyana 2020 elections as credible. This position has been consistently held across all documents emanating from the State Department since August 2, 2020. Yet again, the US is sticking to its guns, only using the words ‘free and fair’ whenever the Guyana 2020 elections are referenced.
In the Executive Summary of the US State Department 2021 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices, released on April 12, 2022, the United States declined for the umpteenth time to explicitly state that they considered the March 2020 elections to be free and fair. Instead, they deferred to international observers. Even while extricating themselves, they still refuse to say whether the polls were credible.
The Report, seen by this publication, states in the Executive Summary: “The Cooperative Republic of Guyana is a multiparty democracy. National and regional elections took place in March 2020, and the People’s Progressive Party/Civic won both the presidency and a majority of representational seats. International and local observers considered the elections free and fair”.
It appears the United States of America considers the Jagdeo/Ali to be an illegitimate regime that was birthed out of necessity. Confidence in Guyana’s democracy stands very low, with a recent poll conducted by the International Republican Institute (IRI) showing only 38% of respondents believe that the official election results reflect the will of the people. Of the 38%, only 22% said that the official results “definitely” reflect the will of the people while 16% said it probably does.
