The PPP has announced plans to build 300 prefab homes for foreigners to rent as they attend the Caribbean Premier League games that are set to be hosted in Guyana over the next three(3) years. Foreigners will access these homes while hundreds of Guyanese still live in the squalor of squatting areas such as “Plastic City”.
The PPP claims that revenue will be used to cover the down payment for poor families to purchase homes. Thus providing housing for those who qualify for bank loans. The PPP has yet to explain how this plan, or any of their housing plans, will provide housing for the hundreds of families that are forced to live in squatting areas because they can not qualify for a mortgage.
In her budget speech, APNU+AFC MP Juretha Fernandes questioned “Is it too much to ask that there be a plan to get thousands of children living in the squalor of squatting areas, be provided with emergency housing?”. With 300 prefab homes set to be constructed, the state has the ability to construct emergency housing. We are only left to wonder what makes the foreign renters take priority over Guyanese squatters.
